I am an American living in Montreal, Quebec. I would like to write about film, food, and/or travel for a living, and figured this would be a great way to start. The ranting will be kept at a minimum. I have studied journalism and founded a student-run newspaper during my senior year of high school. I’ve had bylines in my college newspaper as well.
My food obsession has developed recently (my husband is arguably the bigger foodie, but I think I’m gaining on him). I worked for a top wine retailer a few years back, and really enjoyed listening to the salesmen and executive chef describe their palate sensations and flavors. I’ve audited wine courses and taken several enthusiast cooking courses at Johnson & Wales and various community classes.
Having traveled to twenty countries and counting, I have sampled cuisine from across the globe and am not squeamish (I keep telling people that just about any non-beef red meat – ostrich, kangaroo, horse - tastes rather like beef but better and have yet to be proven wrong). I eat out several times each week and enjoy the hunt for a new restaurant. I love watching cooking shows, or browsing through food magazines or blogs and then trying out the attractive-looking recipes at home. I am fortunate to have a husband who both enjoys my cooking and enjoys doing the dishes – no wife could ask for more.
I took a couple of film courses in college and was always the “film buff” in the family. I do not currently have a tv, though I subscribe to a dvd-by-mail rental service and sometimes manage to see films while they’re still in the theater or on the plane. I enjoy most movies, with few exceptions (Biker Boyz being one of them). Particularly, I tend to focus on feminist and Asian cultural issues in film.
While I also enjoy photography as a hobby, I am a timid photographer. Expect few if any pics. The header picture was taken as I ran away from 3 huge and unafraid raccoons on top of Mont Royal.
Hi Rachel,
I didn’t you had these interests! Here is what my cousin Gina Melinn does on the side originalsphotogallery.com/. She works in Chicago as a interior designer.
Take care,
Amy
Yes! I remember her website. I love her vision – that sort of nostalgic wonder. She could make a killing doing bridal photo shoots – maybe “trash the dress” sessions in a rustic barn or quiet pond. She’d go crazy in Montreal – many of the row houses here have wild color combinations on their facades and wrought iron staircases. Think fire engine red facade and smurf blue roof with white trimming.
Saved as a favorite, I really like your blog!
